Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
