The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
